Spork!

Spork! presents Take a Haiku!

Join us for a late-night, interactive spoken-word extravaganza, featuring a Haiku Slam Competition, plus comedy and poetry from Chris White & Edward Tripp.

Haiku Slam Competition

Sonnets not for you?

Bored to death by eulogies?

Then take a Haiku!

Open to anyone and everyone, this is our fierce (but friendly) competition to find the first St Thomas Haiku Champion.

The rules are very simple. Across 3 rounds, competitors will perform 3 haiku poems each. Haikus should follow the classic three-line 5-7-5 syllable structure

The winners of each round – and the overall winner – will be decided by audience vote.

The prizes!

1st place will receive £50 cash and a bespoke Festival of St Thomas Stories Trophy (designed by Edward Tripp).

2nd place will get a pair of tickets to Spork! and a Spork! Mug.

Get involved

Fancy giving it a go? We’re looking for up to 12 Slammers to take part. To compete, just send an email to Chris, sporkpoetry@gmail.com

Chris & Ed

We’ll also have an audience limerick competition and performances from two of the silliest spoken-word artists in the South West – Chris White and Edward Tripp.

Chris is a submerging artist, former Bard of Exeter and a multiple slam winner, who often talks about queerness, identity and ducks.

Edward Tripp is surreal stand-up poet once described as a cross between Dave Allen and David Lynch. Hilarious, strange and slightly deranged.

Spork! Poetry CIC is a spoken-word organisation bringing shows, workshops & artist support to Exeter and beyond. We create poetry and performance that’s fun, engaging and accessible, hosting a regular night at Exeter Phoenix that features an eclectic mix of poetry, comedy and music. Previous guests have included John Hegley, Vanessa Kisuule and Harry Baker. We also run a range of activities throughout the year, from slam competitions to family workshops, to get more people involved in writing and performing.

REFUNDS

We know how uncertain things can be at the moment, so if you cannot attend your performance due to an issue related to COVID-19, you will be able to receive a refund.

ACCESSIBILITY

There is the opportunity for you to let us know about any access requirements you have during the booking process. The performance space is wheelchair accessible and carers are provided with a free ticket.
